Scope and Content

Two albums of photographs depicting Colonel Ruxton and family, many taken in Weihaiwei, China. The images include military scenes as well as views of local countryside, people and local customs. The images are mounted in two bound albums, but include some loose postcards and prints. Some of the photographs are captioned.

Includes photographs of Colonel R. M. C. Ruxton; Mrs Catherine Louise Ruxton; Chinese soldiers of the (British) First Chinese Regiment, Weihaiwei; street scenes and notable buildings in Weihaiwei, including the Queen's Hotel; funeral processions; opera actors; actors and actresses. A number of images focus on the historical Chinese practice of footbinding [foot binding].
