Administrative / Biographical History

When Sir John Franklin and Francis Crozier failed to return from their attempt to navigate the northwest passage several expeditions were sent to search for them. In 1853 a United States search expedition was dispatched under the command of Elisha Kent Kane to search the Baffin Bay area. In 1855 a second expedition was sent out to search for Kane and the crew of the Advance. Hartstene commanded the Release with Charles C Simms in command of the Arctic . They found the expedition at Godhaven, Greenland.
