The Nannau Estate Papers

Household inventories, estate accounts, rentals and sale catalogues, 1822-1975; miscellaneous papers relating to family history, trusts, estate correspondence, wills and valuations, 1749-1974; mortgages and bonds with related correspondence and financial papers, 1749-1967; and estate management papers, 1843-1975, comprising conveyances and related correspondence, tenancies, farm files and papers relating to the sale of Nannau and Dolrhyd.

Sir Robert Howel Vaughan (1723-1791), 1st Bart, succeeded his brother to the Hengwrt, Nannau and Rug estates, located mainly in Merioneth. Sir Robert's eldest son, Sir Robert Williams Vaughan (1768-1843), 2nd Bart, inherited Nannau. His third son, Griffith Howel Vaughan (d. 1848), inherited Hengwrt, and on the death of his brother Edward, in 1807, also succeeded to Rug. The three estates were again reunited when they were inherited by Sir Robert Williams Vaughan's eldest son, Sir Robert Williams Vaughan, 3rd Bart (1803-1859). On his death without issue the Rug estate was devised to the Hon. C. H. Wynn, 2nd son of Lord Newborough, owner of the Glynllifon estate in Caernarfonshire. Hengwrt was devised to his late wife's sisters, Mary Charlotte Lloyd, Jane Lloyd (later Foulkes) and Harriet Lloyd during their lifetime and then to John Vaughan (1829-1898) of Dolmelynllyn. Nannau was devised to the Hon. Thomas Price Lloyd of Pengwern, Flintshire, for life and then likewise to John Vaughan of Dolmelynllyn. John Vaughan (1829-1898) succeeded to Dolmelynllyn in 1852. He was succeeded by his second son, John Vaughan (1871-1956), Colonel in the 10th Hussars, of Hengwrt and Nannau. Parts of the Nannau and Dolmelynllyn estate were sold in the early 20th century, but Nannau itself was were sold to Mr David Muirhead in 1975.
