Administrative / Biographical History
In 1911, a special meeting of members of the Glasgow & West of Scotland Retail Drapers, Outfitters, Garment Makers & Milliners Association was called to discuss the formation of a benevolent fund for those involved or previously involved in the textile industry in the area, and their widows and dependants. Such a scheme had previously been suggested in 1908 but had not been acted upon. It was agreed to start such a fund and a special Association conference was held in December 1911 at the Merchant House, Glasgow, to formally establish the Glasgow & West of Scotland Wholesale & Retail Drapers Benevolent Fund. Trustees and 5 honorary presidents were appointed along with a committee of management consisting of a president, vice president, and representatives from the wholesale, retail and manufacturing sides of the drapery business.
Funds were raised through subscriptions from companies and individuals along with donations which the committee of management was to invest as it saw fit. Applications for aid from workers, their widows and dependants were considered by the committee and presented as appropriate although some applicants were referred to other charitable organisations.
The fund was still in existence in 1956.
