Administrative / Biographical History

Collins, Woods and Vaughan Jones is a firm of solicitors in Hanover Street, Swansea. They accumulated probates, letters of administration and related papers relating to their clients' interests during their work. Richard Philip Hodgens of Sketty (1859-1945) married Mary Ann Neithercott at Bangor parish church in 1888 and settled in Sketty. He was a prominent businessman with interests in shipping and collieries. They had two daughters, Ethel (d. 1957) and Ina Gwendoline Hodgens (1895-1988), who remained in Sketty unmarried until their deaths. Ethel Hodgens obtained a singing diploma from the Royal Academy of Music in 1913. She was a Voluntary Aid Detachment during WW1 and served with distinction in the First Aid section of the forces .Her fiance was killed in the war. Ina Gwendoline Hodgens was a member of the Guild of Cheltenham Ladies' College. The College in Gloucestershire was founded in 1853. It is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18. The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) is the largest church music organisation in Britain. It was formerly known as the School of English Church Music (SECM) inaugurated on 6 December 1927. In 1945, by command of King George VI, the SECM became the RSCM. In 1954, Gerald H. Knight (d. 1979) became the Director until 1972.
