Scope and Content

Notebook containing detailed working plans for a novel, including a cast of characters and a 'Map of the Club'. Chapter 1 is set in a 'golf club'. It is evident that the notebook relates to an abandoned novel, referred to in the entry for Upward (by Peter Parker, 2013) in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: 'After graduating Upward worked as a private tutor in Cornwall, while unsuccessfully attempting to write a satirical novel set in a golf club, based on his parents' milieu in Essex.'

Three dates are given in the notebook, for September, October and November 1928.
