Edward Upward: 'The Autobiography of a Nonagenarian'

Scope and Content

The title page refers to an autobiography 'in 4 parts'. However, the autobiography is continued with 'Part 5', an outline the life of Allen Upward (a second cousin), and includes some personal memories of him. An indication of the date of composition of 'Part 5' (beginning p. 59) is the reference to the death of Upward's brother 'Mer' at a Nursing Home in Shanklin on 11 July 2000. Upward's subsequent comment (p. 70) that Allen Upward (1863-1926) 'died nearly fifty years ago' is a slip of arithmetic.

The document comprises: title page; Parts 1-4 (pp. 1-51); and Part 5 (pp. 59-70). There are no pages numbered 52-58.
