Scope and Content

Hard covered (black) notebook, with entries dated sporadically. The date June 1926 is recorded at the front of the notebook.

The last dated entry ('Begun Oct 1931') is 'Towards a refutation of I. A. Richards' Theory of Meaning as applied to poetry', comprising 37 numbered statements. Underneath the title, Upward notes: 'All my former attempts - their wreckage strews this book - to propose a solution to the problem of poetic belief have been based unconsciously on idealistic assumptions. The present attempt is consciously based on dialectical materialism'.

Partially foliated (1-85) by Upward, although many further pages are used.

With four loose folios containing entries dated 27 July - 8 August 1928.
