Coal Arch at Cwmdare for Royal Visit

Scope and Content

The picture shows crowds gathered at an arch erected entirely from coal cut at the nearby Cwmdare and Bwllfa collieries to commemorate the visit of George V and Queen Mary in 1912. In the two side arches are filled drams of coal. Also on display are lines of safety lamps and crossed tools. The banner reads ‘Hir Oes i’n Brenhin a’n Brenhines’ which translates as ‘Long Live our King and Queen’.
