Comprises seam plans for the south Wales coalfield, underground plans relating to individual collieries and annotated Ordnance Survey plans. The series also includes geological sections from the late 18th century-early 19th century. The plans within this series record historic mining information and were created by British Coal, the National Coal Board and pre-nationalisation colliery companies.

Administrative / Biographical History
The Surveyors Department sat under the mining department. The Surveyors Department created and kept underground plans. There were four levels of surveyor within the National Coal Board staff structure, these were: Divisional Surveyor, Area Surveyor, Group Surveyor and Colliery Surveyor.
