A collection of glass and plastic photographic negatives depicting scenes of individual collieries across the south Wales coalfield. The negatives show scenes of collieries above and below ground, including, but not limited to, images of underground roadways, pit bottoms, work at the coal face, conveyors, engine rooms, switchgears, building work, tips, first aid rooms, scenes of accidents, coal screens and pithead baths.
Alongside the negatives showing individual collieries there are also negatives representing a range of National Coal Board departments, ancillaries and subjects. These include: work by the Scientific Department (including views of scientific equipment and laboratories); Aberaman Phurnacite Plant, Nantgarw Plant, Caerphilly Tar Plant, Maritime Coke Ovens, Crown Multiheat Site; machinery/apparatus/equipment; trade and recruitment fairs; Talygarn Rehabilitation Centre; domestic heating; roof supports; colliery horses; National Coal Board vehicles; colliery tips; and copies of plans, diagrams, charts and maps. Some of the negatives also show National Coal Board staff, including individual portraits, staff at work, competitions (such as first aid, firefighting and safety), sports and social events.
