Barnsfield Collection

Papers of the Barnsfield and Morgan estates, 1615-1893, including deeds and other documents relating to properties in Abergwili, Newchurch, Llanpumsaint, St Peters and elsewhere in Carmarthenshire, and in Pembrokeshire, 1615-1882; rentals, accounts and vouchers, 1813-1893; records relating to tithe assessments, 1776-1783; records relating to land tax assessments, 1797-1799; copy wills, [early 18th century]-1890; correspondence and other papers of the Gwynne, Morgan, Morris and other families, mainly relating to legal and business matters, [c. 1820]-1886; correspondence and accounts relating to Theodosia Laugharne, 1815-1826, and to Gosport House, Laugharne, 1819-1860; and plans, 1849-1873.

Barnsfield (or Troedyrhiw), Abergwili, Carmarthenshire, was first owned by John Lewis in the 17th century. Richard Lewis (died c. 1748) of Barnsfield was High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire in 1733. The estate stayed in the possession of the Lewis family until the death of Anna Maria Lewis (died c. 1844) of Carmarthen. Nathaniel Morgan (died c. 1805), of Carmarthen, was succeeded by his son Charles Morgan (died c. 1835), of Yswain, Carmarthen, who married Magdalene, and became mayor of the borough, 1819-1820. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Morgan (fl. 1823-1882), married Sackville Frederick Gwynne of Glanbran Park, Llanfair-ar-y-bryn, Carmarthenshire, in 1823; she inherited Barnsfield from Anna Maria Lewis in c. 1844. Their son was Lt Col Charles Morgan Smythies Laugharne Gwynne (fl. 1849-1872). Magdalene Mary Anna Gwynne [their daughter?] was married to William Morris (fl. 1852-1883) of Carmarthen, banker. The Morgan family appear to be related to the Laugharne family of Laugharne.
