Thomas and George Falconer of Blairgowrie: gardening notebook, c.1769-c.1840s

Scope and Content

The volume relates to gardening practices and methods, including sowing, propagation, planting and pruning, soil requirements, treatments for garden pests, and includes alphabetical lists of plants with notes of their characteristics and history. It includes a manuscript catalogue of Peter Couson and Son, nurseryman of Edinburgh, with 140 named varieties of hyacinth, and shorter sections on the care of domestic birds.

Little is known about Thomas and George Falconer, and we cannot be certain this volume was created by them. Their names are written in the front and back of the volume, along with that of Alexander Lock[?], and the place name Blairgowrie [Perthshire].
