Llewellyn-Jones and Armon Ellis, Solicitors, of Mold, Flintshire, had clients in both Flintshire and Denbighshire, including the Hawarden Castle estate, Flintshire. Messrs Barker and Hignett (later Barker and Rogerson), of Chester, Cheshire, acted as the Hawarden estate solicitors until c. 1920, when Llewellyn-Jones and Armon Ellis took over (possibly because Barker and Rogerson was ceasing trading). The Glynne family had owned the estate since the mid 17th century; following the death of Sir Stephen Richard Glynne, 9th Bart (1807-1874), the estate passed to his nephew, William Henry Gladstone, eldest son of William Ewart Gladstone. The estate included valuable mineral deposits that were leased to and exploited by collieries such as Aston Hall, Buckley and Lane End. During the 19th century, the Hawarden Castle estate sold land to a number of railway companies, including the Chester and Holyhead Railway Company and the Wrexham, Mold and Connah's Quay Railway Company.
