Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Colonial Secretary's Office of Tasmania (or Van Diemen's Land as it was then called) was first established on a permanent footing in 1808. The responsibilities of the Office covered a variety of subjects connected with the domestic administration of the colony, including requests by settlers for land, convict administration, clearances for ships and civil service appointments. All correspondence from other government officials passed through the colonial secretary to the colony's lieutenant governor.
The correspondence is arranged chronologically.
