Scope and Content

Letters dating from 1981, relating to: NCN's involvement with a radio programme on the closing of the last iron-ore mine in Cumbria (Rust in peace), and an associated article he has been commissioned to write by the Radio Times; reading engagements at the Rosehill Theatre (Whitehaven) in March, Wordsworth House (Cockermouth) in April, and Kendal (an event in memory of Margaret Cropper, shared with Michael Ffinch); NCN's poetry collection Sea to the west, including its publication, its selection as the Poetry Book Society Summer Choice, associated readings at the National Poetry Centre and Arts Council Library, and a radio review of the book by Melvyn Bragg; a meeting with some other Cornthwaite cousins in April; NCN's thoughts on the actress Jenny Agutter; an interview for Radio Carlisle in June; his work with Granada TV on a series of programmes on the Southern Lakes; Yvonne Nicholson's health problems and her diagnosis with lung cancer in July; her ongoing treatment, NCN's concern, and his efforts to be positive in her company; NCN's invitation to Buckingham Palace [to receive the OBE], which he declines because of Yvonne's illness; and the cancellation of all his readings for the latter part of the year.

/2 includes a schedule of the poems to be read at the Wordsworth House reading; both this and the accompanying letter are in NCN's hand.
