Scope and Content

Letters from 1975, relating to: NCN's honorary degree from the Open University and its conferment in Newcastle, which Cornthwaite attended; various readings by NCN, including events at Sunderland in March [to mark the publication of NCN's Stitch and stone (Ceolfrith Press, 1975)], the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in the summer (a large event which included a contribution from Robert Graves among others), the Horton Arts Festival in July, St John's College in York in September, and at Lowes Court Gallery, Egremont, in the same month; quotes of NCN's about a new marina development at Haverigg, which were published in the Guardian in May; the Nicholsons' summer holidays in Scotland and East Yorkshire; plans for a BBC radio programme which comprises a sound picture of south Cumberland, with NCN's verse used as reference points; a television programme NCN has been involved with called Borderers; the publication of NCN's autobiography [Wednesday early closing (1975)]; reviews of the book, including good reviews in the Listener (by Ronald Blythe) and the Times Literary Supplement; plans for Barrow News to serialize the autobiography, for which they are paying well; a motor accident in which both Nicholsons were hurt in October; and an invitation NCN has received to appear at the summer 1976 Poetry International reading.

NCN's letters /16-17 are holograph. /3 and /10 are letters from Yvonne Nicholson, and /8 (a postcard) was also written by Yvonne.
