Scope and Content

Letters dating from 1977, relating to: a Radio Three programme based on NCN's poems, A wall walks slowly, broadcast in February, which subsequently won three of the Imperial Tobacco Radio Awards; Yvonne Nicholson's poor health, including a crushed disc in her spine; NCN's bout of bronchitis during the winter; reading engagements at Didsbury, Bedlington and Lumb Bank (Mexborough, where the Nicholsons met Ted Hughes for the first time); NCN's appearance on a programme called Sunday worship - reflections on a journey for the BBC TV Religions Unit; abortive plans to take part in a television series to be introduced by John Betjeman; the Nicholsons' holiday in the Isle of Arran in September; a trip to Border Television in Carlisle for filming in October; and NCN's receipt of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. /11 includes a copy typescript account by Yvonne Nicholson of their visit to Buckingham Palace to receive the medal.
