Bundle of letters

Scope and Content

Letters from 1976, relating to: a visit to Lowick Bridge to meet the parents and teachers of a boy who has been studying NCN's poetry at Manchester Grammar School; good reviews his book [Wednesday early closing] has received in the national press; plans for Radio 3 to repeat NCN's programme Letters to a friend; reading engagements at a sixth-form conference in Carlisle in February (after which NCN unexpectedly encountered Miss United Kingdom), a Poetry Society event in London in early autumn, and at Durham and Morden Tower (Newcastle) in October; NCN's receipt of a Civil List Pension of £500 a year for services to literature; NCN's thoughts on the Poetry Society, which he feels has been taken over by "the scruffiest of the pop poets and the like", although he is still greatful for the Society's grants which help to fund his readings; a visit to the Northern Arts manuscript collection at Newcastle Literary and Philosophical Society, to which NCN sold the manuscript of Wednesday early closing; and Yvonne Nicholson's cancer scare (and subsequent all-clear) in December.

/4 is a postcard sent by Yvonne Nicholson from the Nicholsons' holiday in Flamborough [Yorkshire]; /6 and /8 are also letters from Yvonne.
