Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Students' Union was founded in 1904. It was governed by a Council, elected from and responsible to the students. Students paid an annual membership fee to join. Clubs and Societies were entitled to become affiliated to the Union upon payment of an annual fee. The Union itself constituted a Debating Society and arranged an Annual Dinner, Annual Dance, other social events and lectures. Members of the Union were also entitled to use the College Common Room. One of the aims of the Union was to promote inter-collegiate relations with other institutions of the University, so Birkbeck Students Union sent representatives to the University of London Athletics Union and the Students' Representative Council of London University.
Under the Royal Charter granted to the College in 1926, the Union appointed two of its members to the Governing Body of the College.
