Administrative / Biographical History

The National Health Service Act 1946 established 388 hospital management committees, which reported directly to regional hospital boards. The hospital management committees had responsibility for managing the administration of NHS hospitals, excluding teaching hospitals. They were abolished by the NHS Reorganisation Act 1973.
