Administrative / Biographical History

James Deuchar acquired the Ridley Arms Brewery, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle–upon–Tyne, in 1880 and the Monkwearmouth Brewery in Sunderland in 1890. James Deuchar Ltd was registered in July 1894 as a limited liability company to acquire the business. The Ridley Arms Brewery was closed in 1895. In 1898 the company was liquidated and a new company with the same name was reconstructed and registered in August to acquire the assets of the old. The company acquired William Ross & Co, Lochside Brewery, North East Road, Montrose, in 1926. The Monkwearmouth Brewery ceased to brew in 1936 and was converted into a mineral water factory. Newcastle Breweries Ltd acquired the company along with 125 licensed houses and hotels, in 1956. The Lochside Brewery ceased to brew in the same year, and it was sold to Macnab Distilleries Ltd and converted to a whisky distillery. Distilling ceased in 1992 and the building was demolished in 2005.
