Papers of F.J. Haverfield

Archaeological papers, 19th-early 20th century, of Francis Haverfield, primarily relating to his work on Roman Britain. The papers include notebooks, manuscripts, typescripts, plans, and photographs. The majority of the material is pre-1920, though the archive also includes some material collected by Margerie Venables Taylor, whose correspondence continues after Haverfield's death in 1919.

Francis John Haverfield (1860-1919) was a historian and archaeologist; he specialised in Roman epigraphy and Roman Britain. His works include The Romanization of Roman Britain (London, 1905), and Ancient Town Planning (Oxford, 1913); he also contributed to the Victoria County History series. The majority of the archive has been arranged according to archaeological site, in pre-1974 county groupings.
