Administrative / Biographical History

Charles Robert Lovell was born on 5 September 1904 in Durham. He served his apprenticeship as a merchant seaman from 1920 to 1924, and sailed on many of his subsequent voyages from the port of Cardiff. He married Joan, and together they had a son, Jeremy Charles Stuart Lovell, who followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a merchant seaman. Jeremy Charles Stuart Lovell was born on 29 September 1934 in Southampton. He served his apprenticeship between 1952 and 1954, and like his father sailed many of his subsequent voyages from the port of Cardiff. He was made third mate in 1955, and became Master in 1961. He returned from his final voyage in November 1980, having visited ports across the UK, Europe, Asia, South America and North America during his career.
