Precedent Book of the Court of the Honour of Peveril, 1747-1833

Scope and Content

The collection comprises one volume containing model forms and copies of documents produced by the Peveril Court.

The volume contains undated 'Rules respecting the Peverel Court', written on loose folios of papers and in a different hand from the remainder of the volume.

The bulk of the volume contains precedents, entitled 'Peverel Court: Rules and Orders for regulating and settling the practise of this Court, 31 March 1747'. It comprises copies of documents and tables of fees dated 1747-63 (up to f 153)

Folios 154- end contain a mid-eighteenth century copy or translation of a list of places within the jurisdiction of the Honour of Peveril, 20 November 30 Hen VIII [1538]; plus six further documents copied out as precedents, dated 1777, 1778, 1826, 1833 and n.d.

At the back of the volume is a contemporary index.

A letter from the Public Record Office to L.V.D. Owen, professor of history at University College Nottingham, dated 31 January 1948, is inserted into the front of the volume and relates to records of the Honour of Peveril in the Augmentation Office (MS 65/2).

Administrative / Biographical History

The Court of the Honour of Peveril was established in Nottingham some time before 1113 for the recovery of small debts. It had jurisdiction over 127 settlements in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Successive members of the Willoughby family (Barons Middleton) were stewards of the Honour, and further material relating to the Honour of Peveril can be found in the Middleton collection. From 1790 until its abolition in 1849, the Peveril Court was held in Lenton, Nottinghamshire.
