The Weston Collection: Nursing in West Africa

Scope and Content

A collection of photographs, slides, negatives and watercolours. Y3043TT and Y3043UU have been listed in detail by Erica Ryan with minor amendments by D.H. Simpson. Y3043VV has not been listed in detail.
Miss Weston had spent a number of years in Northern Nigeria and Ghana with Miss Gladys M. Pearce Simmonds ('Simmie') - both were nurses and the photographs reflect their work in Africa.
Mrs Collings, Weston's niece, wrote 'I think that the first posting for my aunt began in the early 1950s. I do not know when Miss Pearce Simmonds first worked abroad but she may have already been working in Africa when my aunt arrived. I believe that they returned to the UK in 1966. Miss Pearce Simmonds died in 1985'.

Administrative / Biographical History

Elsie May Weston, who died at the age of 61 in February 1988, was a nurse in Africa.
