Scope and Content

This file contains 35 letters (all but one typed) to Martin Miller (MM) from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). It includes

-contracts and letters concerning radio talks prepared and given by MM, including for his "Imitation of Hitler" (4 April 1940), "Hitler speaks in an air raid shelter" (8 November 1940), "Talk on Ivor Novello" (8 March 1951)

-contracts and letters concerning parts in radio programmes, including "Vormarsch der Freiheit" episode 5 (13 December 1940) and "November the nineth" (17 December 1940)

-letters concerning scripts submitted by MM to the BBC for consideration, including "Weihnachtsständchen für Adolf" (24 December 1940)

-a letter from the BBC to the German and Austrian Labour Exhange at Hannover House, High Holborn, listing some of the 'very many useful things' MM had done for the BBC (6 October 1942)

-letters and financial statements relating to MM's general employment with the BBC

-letters concerning arrangements for rehearsals, recordings and broadcasts of one-off productions in which MM was involved

-letters from colleagues congratulating MM on his performances and expressing pleasure at working with him, including one (handwritten) from Mary Hope Allen (24 July [1952]), from Antony Jay relating to a radio dramatisation of "The education of Hyman Kaplan" by Leo Roston (23 August 1961)

-a letter of thanks from one of the founding members of the BBC's German language service, Carl Brinitzer, to MM for his friendship and kindness generally and particularly for the gift of a picture of Heinrich Heine, whose biography Brinitzer had recently completed (27 December 1962).

One photocopy of the letter contract for "Imitation of Hitler", two photocopies of the letter contract for "Vormarsch der Freiheit" and two copies of the letter contract for "Hitler speaks in an air raid shelter" have been destroyed.
