Scope and Content

J. J. Phelps was the Honorary Director of the Old Manchester and Salford Exhibition held at the City Art Gallery, Manchester, during March and April 1904. The aim of the exhibition was to show the evolution of the district, from prehistoric settlement to modern industrial centre. The success of the exhibition led to increased public support for the creation of a permanent museum of local history. The Old Manchester Committee was appointed to work towards this goal at a public meeting in the Town Hall on 16 Nov 1904.
