Scope and Content

From Liverpool to [John] Pawson at the Methodist Chapel in Wakefield. Atmore has just discoveredfrom Dr Poole’s letter that Pawson is on the road to recovery. This came as an enormous reliefas he had been worried that the letter would bring the news of Pawson’s death. In addition toPawson’s own letter, Atmore had received another which said that the doctors had judgedPawson’s case to be beyond hope.

Since Atmore last wrote, he has also had problems although not as severe as Pawson’s. LastSaturday evening his dear [wife] Harriet was delivered of a baby boy who died after just eight hoursof life; the first time that death has intruded on them since their marriage. Spiritual matters arediscussed.

Their dear mother has also been confined to her bed with poor health for almost a fortnight andtheir youngest child is very sick. Spiritual matters are discussed.

Atmore was sorry to hear that Dr P. [Poole] is leaving Wakefield, although he did doubt hischances of succeeding in the profession there. He is a truly good and pious man and Atmore hopesthat the Lord will point out the right road.

Harriet has had a very bad time and is still weak. Atmore is however hopeful that she is doingwell.
