Scope and Content

From 12 Virginia Terrace, Dover Road, [London: Atherton was stationed in London in 1840] to anunnamed correspondent. Atherton very gratefully accepts the offer of a morning sermon at Southwarkon Sunday the 15th, although he is rather sorry that bearing in mind his correspondent’s poorstate of health, he should have two services on the same day and in places very distant from oneanother. There will be no collection ‘nor any other Lion[?] in the way’. The only otherextra will be the urging of a good attendance at the Missionary meeting on the following evening, which his correspondent can announce on reading the bill which will no doubt be given to him, announcing the meeting. Some of the local meetings in a few London chapels are not as popular as onemight wish, but Atherton has found that it helps if the speaker urges his listeners to attend.‘We still have some good influence left, especially in the pulpit’.
