Scope and Content

From Sarah Cogan to [F. Baker]. Cogan states that she encloses something for Baker to look at but insists she does not wish to demand upon his liberality. She goes on to say that she is a treasurer for a new society recently formed for the promotion of the righteous cause of African freedom. The enclosed document [not present] is written with a desire to exhibit the moral and religious aspects of the Free Labour Produce Cause. The society wishes to express a preference for free trade grown produce rather than slave grown produce, but does not profess a desire for abolition of it altogether. Cogan states she has obtained the signatures of respected gentlemen who support this notion and asks respectfully for Baker to add his name to the list.
