From Moncure D. Conway to James C. Street, dated at Hamlet House, Hammersmith. Conway writes that Prof. Harley has resigned the presidency and that the conciliated provisional committee has been dissolved. He states that this has not been brought about by any unpleasant incidents and was due to the council being unable to disclose any new step that should be taken in furtherance of the objects named in the organisation of June 78. The number of literal periodicals and journals already existing led to the belief that any further undertaking might seem superserviceable. The letter is written on the reverse of a printed leaflet containing the constitution of the 'Association of Liberal Thinkers' as adopted June 14 1878. It outlines the objectives of the Association and the provisional committee.
