Endowed by Lady Elizabeth Hastings (1739) to provide maintenance for 5 scholars at Queen's College, Oxford Ripon Grammar School was one of the original twelve designated schools from which scholars were to be drawn. No pupil from Ripon was successful in the examination and hence in 1786 the School was replaced on the Hastings list by Hipperholm. In 1868 the School applied for readmission, which was granted in 1876. The records of Lady Elizabeth Hastings' Charities [LE] is also held by the Borthwick.
