Administrative / Biographical History

Marie Rosenberg was born in 1908 of Austrian nationality, and had worked in a German University but the fact she had a Jewish Grandparent and because of her sex it came to an end. She came to Britain and was taken on by Birbeck College as a research student. She then worked for the Freshwater Biological Association as a botanist conducting research on the algae of freshwater, before she was interned in 1940 (when she was 32) (war time period) initially in Holloway Prison Internment camp During this time members of the FBA wrote to the Home Secretary requesting her release.
