A very long letter, with much quotation from hymns and the Scriptures. Has first heard of the death of John Williams the missionary, at the hands of some island tribe. Describes his daily list and diet, his holding of land and crops, the number of churches in the settlement etc. Writes wittily of the plagues of flies. There are several ships (named) loading for England, so he will probably write another to J J shortly. However, he complains that since he arrived 20 months earlier, he has only received one letter from England - and that from J J. A letter full of anecdote and the frankness of a lonely man.
