Scope and Content

The original score - of which this is a photocopy - is handwritten by Burgess and inscribed "Leicester, August 30th, 1952" followed by a quote from Rimbaud's Le Coeur supplicié, "Ithyphalliques et pioupiesques. / Leurs insultes l'ont dépravé!"

Administrative / Biographical History

Burgess dedicated the lullaby to his niece, Ceridwen (Looker), who was born in March 1952 to Burgess's sister-in-law, Hazel, and her husband, William Looker.

Wiegenlied formed part of a concert of piano, vocal and chamber music by Burgess that was held at Brown University, Rhode Island, America in February 1999. The concert was titled The Brides of Enderby.
