Scope and Content

Sonata 1 (St John's) is inscribed "Anthony Burgess. November 12 1993 post operationem glottalem [after an operation on the glottis]".

See also AB/ARCH/A/MUS/79: File containing fragments of unidentified scores for piano, or solo instrument and piano.

Administrative / Biographical History

In late 1993 Burgess underwent surgery on his glottis, which left him unable to speak. He is possibly referring to Saint John the Silent, a medieval monk known for his vow of silence and gifts as a healer, in the title of Sonata 1 (St. John's).
