Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
A musical, composed by Burgess, that takes its inspiration from the fact that the Bolshevik leader was living in Manhattan when the Russian Revolution erupted in February 1917. It was originally envisaged that Burgess would write the libretto only, with Stanley Silverman composing the music: Silverman, however, subsequently withdrew from the project and thus Burgess also composed the score himself.
Burgess had completed the first draft of the libretto and lyrics by March 1977 and, by April 1979, he had nearly finished the piano-vocal score of Act One and probably completed the rest within the next few months. Burgess's 1982 novel, The End of the World News, is in part based on the libretto and a revised setting of it is included as part of the published text.
