Begun during the autumn of 1963, and published in 1964, Language Made Plain is Burgess's introduction to the study of language and of languages, in which he explores aspects such as the structure of speech and the organisation of sounds.
A revised and expanded edition was published in 1992, titled A Mouthful of Air.
