First published in 1965, the novel tells the story of Denis Hillier, an aging British agent on his last assignment, who must persuade his old schoolfriend, Edwin Roper - now one of the great scientific brains of the USSR - to return to England. On the one hand, the book is an espionage novel, written as a spoof of Ian Fleming, and, on the other, it explores questions about the nature of good and evil and free will.
