A Meeting in Valladolid

Scope and Content

A short story by Burgess which dramatises an imaginary debate between Shakespeare and Cervantes in which they fall out over who was the first to create the Don Quixote/Hamlet and Sancho Panza/Falstaff universal archetypes.

The story was published in 1989 in The Devil's Mode, a collection of Burgess's short stories, and was later adapted by Burgess for radio. It was first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 1991.

This series contains a file of four drafts of Burgess's radio adaptation of the short story.
