This archive concerns the Illtyd Thomas family estate in Swansea and its neighbourhood. Thomas Edward Thomas was a fairly substantial landowner at the beginning of the nineteenth century. He held a number of leases of property within Swansea from the Corporation and owned estates at Bishopston, Loughor and in the Swansea Valley. Thomas Edward Thomas was one of the magistrates of Swansea, an alderman and treasurer of the Swansea Savings Bank from 1829-1868. He died in 1868. His son Illtyd (d 1889) married in 1836 and at this date acquired lands from his father. Papers surviving from Illtyd's lifetime are mainly concerned with the administration of the lands and money from his first marriage. He married a second time and from this second marriage had one son, Illtyd Edward. Illtyd died in 1889. There were no children from Illtyd Edward's own marriage and after his death in 1949 the remaining estate was finally sold up.
