Administrative / Biographical History
The South African United Party was formed when the economic downturn of theearly 1930s led to a coalition between the ruling conservative Nationalist Partyunder J.B.M. Hertzog and the South African Party under General Jan ChristianSmuts. The coalition, led by Smuts, only lasted until 1948, when the breakawayHerenigde (Reunited) Nationalist Party under D.F. Malan won the general elections.The H.N.P. held power until 1994, while the United Party remained the chiefopposition till its dissolution in 1977.
