Administrative / Biographical History
The Association of National Health Service Officers had its origins in the creation of the Association of Insurance Committee Officers in 1919. Following the National Health Service Act the Association of Insurance Committee Officers was reorganised and expanded to become the Association of Executive Councils and Pricing Committees (National Health Service) in 1948/1949. It was a recognised NHS union for administrative and clerical staff and recruited mainly in the Prescription Pricing Authority and in Family Health Service Authorities (and their predecessors the Family Practitioner Committees and Executive Councils). In 1968 the Association affiliated to the National Federation of Professional Workers and had a membership of 3,888. The Association adopted the name Association of National Health Service Officers in 1974 and merged with the National Association of Local Government Officers in 1992, shortly before NALGO merged with COHSE and NUPE to form UNISON.
