Scope and Content

This collection is divided into three sections.

Section One: History of Peace Councils. This consists of correspondencebetween Eileen Bernal and others on the history of the Peace CouncilsMovement, the history of Reading and Dorking peace councils and scrap books1950 - 1972.
Section Two: The History of Local and National Peace Councils. This consists of interviews and reminiscences with members of various localpeace councils 1969 - 1973.
Section Three: Peace Organisations Outside Britain. This consists ofreminiscences and correspondence relating to peace organisations in Greece,Guyana, South Africa and New Zealand 1972 - 1973.

Eileen Bernal fl 1938 - 1972

Eileen Bernal was the wife of John Desmond Bernal (1901 - 1971), Professor ofCrystallography at Birkbeck College, University of London, and a foundermember of the World Peace Council. They married in 1922 and had two sons.
