Papers of Jensen Motors Ltd
Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
As motor manufacturers, the firm dates from 1935/6, the Jensen brothers having earlier experiences as coachbuilders, in which role they took over the firm of W.J. Smith and Sons. For a time in the post-war period, lorry manufacture, begun in 1939, was added to the production of high class cars. This aspect of manufacture was replaced by subcontract work.
After both brothers had resigned as a result of ill-health, the company was successively owned by the Norcros Group, William Brandt, the merchant bankers and the Californian business man Kjell Qvale. The firm went into liquidation in 1976.
