J.M. Hall to William Mackinnon. Agrees with William Mackinnon times are bad. Great difficulty in placing bills, through agency of McKim. Tried Lawes & National Discount Co. personally but bills rejected, Smith agreed to take short term bills to Bank of England, £4,000 left to be cashed. Doubts widespread about most banks, Australian in bad odour. Worried about effect on his standing of one bill queried, and confusion as to accounts. One of C.G. Bank acceptances of William Mackinnon Co's drafts on BISN proceeds. These McIlwraith wished to credit to Lawes' account thus, importance of strengthening Bank's position explained. Would agree to half William Mackinnon telegraph views, S.I. & Co. will cash any short notes for C.G. Bank at the Bank of England; but such notes should be handled "out of sight" at (e.g.) Cunliffe's - even they dubious. J.M.Hall does not want to handle similar Bills. Best to deal with them in Glasgow. P.S. at front of letter - William Mackinnon 's notes received today and yesterday destroyed. Payments received £18,538.PP MS 1/BISN/1/5/2

Co. over destination of proceeds on C. of G. acceptances; the £30,000 not to them but to James's account. (James himself possible source of MacIlwraith & Smith's mistaken ideas on this.) Firm in Bombay trade JC & Co. suspect; also McHairys Bank of Sudan. J.M.H. won't offer £4,000 bills on hand at present Struach sent list of Bills, including BISN Co. for £2,944; had to endorse 4 of the list. Brightwell & Gillet, McKim and S.I.Co. sent lists. A memo of the complete lot to be prepared for S. Western Co. caught with £14,000 loss on jute; telegraphed M & M & Co. Calcutta, to ask for further cover on consignments in transit. Special charter problem, other cargo to Suez chancy, passengers doubtful, so rates high. Enclosed hurried note on using "Asia" for this purpose. J.M. Hall to William Mackinnon. From New York, no envelope. Visit regarding attempt to sell City of Glasgow Bank's holding in Chicago, Milwaukee ' St Paul Railway. Not seen Johnson - key of his plan, the Chicago & Rock Island Railway. Playing on fear that chief rival North Western could cut them out by its acquisition from Northern Canadian trade. J.M.H. points out CMSP R'way valuable link to North Western in race to Pacific & transcontinental trade. But nothing heard from N.W.; inclined therefore to close Johnson at 3,600,00. Important to achieve reduction of Bank's advances, and Freeport lawsuit final settlement months away possibly so blocking the Railroad issuing its own Bonds. Had a look at Thomsons books [probably Florida Land Co.] £15,000 needed just to keep even - in addition to £10,000 wheat a/c (14,000 dollars already lost and prices worsening.) Quotes William Mackinnon 's coded telegram and his decipherment - William Mackinnon acceptance of 3½m. at worst. Explains negotiations cannot be hurried.PP MS 1/BISN/1/5/6

J.M. Hall to William Mackinnon. regarding argument over Bombay & Calcutta hiring rates and tonage allowances and dispute about "Himalaya", "the flower of the fleet of our steamers". Complains at once, too subservient to the Governor, ignored his complaints, considered only their commission and also tendered too cheaply. Other complaints about the agency - issue of champagne to ships' officers; excessive compliance in tug damage case. Against the innovation of iron - tubes in steamers - "let others experiment first". Admits mistakes in Tea a/c sales clerical errors. Regrets unable to contact William Mackinnon as out of town. Asks JMH's signature. b) J.M.Hall - 16 Jan 1868, - press-copy of letter to Schiller. Has heard nothing of the dispute, except that his brother has resigned from the Board; brother holds his power of attorney; will seek details, meantime declines to sign. Hall to William Mackinnon. regarding refusal to accept Sunday sailing as part of Karachi contract; telegram to that effect; no cotton orders placed as yet; Peter's (Pittall) involvement in election to a Club; agrees to give £2-£5 to William Mackinnon. charity but nothing further "to Kirks" until "union" question settled; tell I.N.F. can "get him" for his £15 shares; press-copy of letter to Leresche enclosed; lain selling out C & G Bank shares; argument regarding wharfage charges. Enclosure letter to C.S. Leresche by J.M.H. of Jan 17th in press-copy form. Almost indecipherable, page numbering seems illogiaal; refers to C. of G. Bank involvement with the American railroad, and possibly to the two offers to buy mentioned in the Irvin letter. No comment in body of letter above as to its contents. Enclosures a) unmentioned in above JTH letter to William Mackinnon. of Jan 31, 1868. Largely statements of sums at debit on "our investments". Revaluations for closing book discussed Peter [Hall]. Total sum written off capital- £40,956. Requests for "testimonials" to Barlow unfairly considered heavy drinker by Galbraith, harming his career. b) Press copy of William Mackinnon's letter to Brown of Jan 17th - placed inside the envelope. Re-iterates refusal to operate contract mail steamer on Sunday. No complaints for 6 years; present contract has run some months successfully; only one Sunday in two asked for so clearly not essential-nearest to "religious" argument, Sunday rest is needful. As should be emphasized to the P.O.Co. A late Monday sailing would save the time involved. Sidesteps Brown's letter as to towage, Bombay-Calcutta rates etc.PP MS 1/BISN/1/5/16
