The collection comprises lectures on scientific subjects delivered by Lillie at the Mechanics' Institutes of Launceston and Hobart, Tasmania.

John Lillie D.D. was the grandfather of the biologist Denis Gascoigne Lillie (b 1888).

Purchased at Hodgsons', London, April 1931 (accession number 74196) and at Stevens' London, February 1935 (accession number 68563).

Among these, MS.5254, comprising correspondence and very miscellaneous papers, includes material on earlier generations of the Lillie family, among them letters to John Lillie D.D.


Lillie's Lectures on Science were published at Hobart in 1839.
