DAY BOOKS OF THOMAS GROVES AND FAMILY, STONEMASONS OF MILTON-UNDER-WYCHWOOD

Scope and Content

The history of these documents is unclear. In early 1993, they and B118 were found at County Hall with part of Acc. 292 (part of the Fane Papers, now catalogued as E4), but they bore no relation to this collection at all. It was therefore thought that at some stage they had been attached to the

collection in error. However, there was no indication of when or from where they might have arrived at Oxfordshire Archives. It was therefore decided to catalogue them by themselves.

Thomas Groves and his family worked as stonemasons in the area around Milton-under-Wychwood. Several mid-century Directories for Oxfordshire record members of the family being based there, and the day books themselves record work carried out in the west of the county,

and even in west Gloucestershire, especially Bledington.

Catalogued in August 1994 by Robin Darwall-Smith.
