COPY LETTER: [Walter Jones] to Sir R. H. Williams-Bulkeley, Bart., K. C. B., in reply to letter of 3 June. The writer says that Anglesey is a very depressed area with a severe degree of unemployment. Farmers have been reducing numbers of employees and these men were largely absorbed in road schemes, but since the Government stopped grants in aid, work on the roads is much reduced. At present about 160 families of able-bodied men out of work are being maintained out of the rates: about 23/- for a family of 6. W. J. does not think a great deal of money subscriptions can be expected, but the Union of Women's Institutes might from working parties and provide articles of clothing, which should be distributed locally in cases of severe distress.
